DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY

History of the Department:

The department of sociology as majoring subject was established in the Pattamundai College during the academic year 1995-96, vide Go. No-33837/dt-17.03.1994 and DHE order No-19552/26.04.1995 and affiliated to utkal university, Bhubaneswar. Amongst all social sciences, sociology is one of the most coveted stream in the Arts and Humanities courses of the college since it’s inception. The department has pioneered in providing quality education and has thus able to produce scholars, intellectuals, administrators and educationists etc.

Initially, the department was headed by Prof. R. N. Swain and Sri Manoj Parida Lecturer was with the department as fellow teacher. Subsequently, in the year 2000 Sri S. Sahoo, Asso Professor in sociology joined the Department as head after the transfer of prof. R. N. Swain. In 2008, Sri R. K. Senapati, Sr. Lecturer joined the Department as Head and continued till March 2018. Later in April, 2018, Lt. Manoj Parida took the charge of Head and Sri R.K Senapati worked as fellow teacher till date. Initially, the department had a sanctioned student strength of 32 and it increased to 40 nos of seats in 2018.

The department conducts. Periodical tests to assess and measure student’s performance and organizes department seminars, Extra-mural, state level and National level seminars and webinars on the topics related to social issues. Eminent professors and distinguished scholars from different universities across the nation, have visited and contributed in disseminating knowledge to our students.

The department strives to provide coaching and guidance especially to the underprivileged (ST/SC/OBC) Students and the slow-learners of the department. Further, the department has introduced ‘Mentor-Mentee’ system to provide personal counseling and to support them for any kind of difficulty in their curriculum. As mentors, we work for finding out hidden talents of the students in various fields of academic, co-curricular activities and promote them for their holistic developments.

The Department is not only imparting updated model course curriculum as prescribed by the Utkal University in the classroom but make the students learn in the community through various Field work/ Empirical studies. It tries to outreach the society by undertaking research project, organizing seminars and webinars, etc.

ICT Facilities in the Department:

The department provides modern information and communication technology facilities, services and support to enhance the teaching and learning aims of the college. The department class-room in fitted with an interactive whiteboard and the faculties are provided with a modern laptop, WI-FI which are connected to the network. The department utilizes Google, Google Meet, Zoom, E-Journal website, E-mail and Online storage in the delivery of teaching and learning.
